Roles

System Administrators perform the administration and service assurance functions for all national Operational Support Systems (OSSs) and for the regional OSSs. They are also involved in the implementation of new projects as subject matter experts for technologies involving systems, networking and servers.

Technical Advisors build, manage and deploy the common infrastructure and access systems for the national OSS management team. They also perform the administration and service assurance functions for all infrastructure-related systems.

Top responsibilities

System Administrator:

  • Administration of the OS-NORM Platform
  • Support of server hardware, operating system, system tools and applications
  • System management, security, monitoring, and capacity planning
  • Installing and upgrading operating systems and applications using standard configuration tools, and proceeding to the appropriate fine-tuning
  • Implementing backup procedures in order to restore data or system configuration, including off-site storage and rotating media backup
  • Performing scripting/program language requirements for an EMS (Enterprise Management System) /OSS (Operation Support Systems)

 

Technical Advisor:

  • Senior Technical Advisors provide the high level Architecture and Design Review on all projects
  • Participates in and sign-offs on the design process (NRD/NDD, SDS)
  • Ensures alignment and integration with existing infrastructure and OSS platforms
  • Provides support to the SMEs (Subject Matter Expert) and Implementation Team SMEs during the implementation and support phases

  • To provide a professionally maintained platform from a systems administration perspective, for the customers
  • To improve the processes around platform management
  • To provide guidance to project teams in delivering a standard operating environment for system administration

Main challenges

  • Keeping the balance between cost, schedule and quality, while maintaining system integrity
  • Dealing with process gaps in delivering a project

Interaction

  • Interfaces with OS-NORM Help Desk and ATS (Advance technical support) to provide service assurance to the OS-NORM community
  • Network Provisioning and Planning, Network Operations and Vendors

Qualifications

  • A university degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal, documentation and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Unix, Linux and MS-Windows
  • A fundamental understanding of configuring and troubleshooting Windows/Unix server hardware
  • Familiarity with networked/distributed computing environment
  • Familiarity with basic system administration tools and processes (e.g. the ability to boot/shutdown a machine, add and remove user accounts, use backup programs, and maintain system database files -group, hosts, aliases, etc.)
  • A fundamental understanding of the operating system (e.g. the ability to understand job control, distinctions between the kernel and the shell, and the skill to write scripts in some administrative language - TK, Perl, shell)
